The latest part to come out of the R&D department over at Athena is this Racing 50cc cylinder kit which features the same power valve system currently used on their AM6 70cc kits. Suitable for all Derbi D50B0 engines this Racing 50cc barrel carries the usual Athena traits with having a perfectly finished aluminium Nicasil plated barrel and a surface treated piston guaranteed to give excellent performance in all conditions.

The power valve is controlled by exhaust gas pressure and is supplied with different strength springs allowing you to control when the power valve opens. This allows for a good setup on many exhaust systems giving great power right through the rev range thanks to the varying exhaust port duration. So you get all the benefits of this high end racing cylinder at a high RPM whilst improving power at low RPM's too. This gives a smooth flowing ride allowing faster lap times thanks to the added power and torque at low - mid RPM. New 'GET POWER' ECU for Yamaha TMAX 2008 > 2011

'GET POWER' is a new ECU from ATHENA engineered by GET for Yamaha TMAX models 2008 to 2011. If you're looking for maximum performance and ease of use then this is the ECU for you. It's quick and easy to install (plug and play) and offers improved engine performance, better acceleration and throttle control. It also has an RPM limiter tuned by GET engineers to maintain drivability and performance within safety limits. The unit is also GPA ready (Get Power Assistance). By connecting the optional GPA switch you can choose from one of ten engine power assistance settings and therefore tune the bike to suit any riding style or track surface.

It's worth noting that this ECU is designed primarily for standard engines using racing exhausts. The performance maps come pre-loaded on the device and have been developed by GET engineers in conjunction with some of the best riders. It's also possible to upload different mappings designed for engine modifications such as high compression pistons, cams or bikes running on racing fuel. So if you want more bottom or top end power then this is also possible. By using the optional PC-ECU interface you can download maps from the web in a few easy steps. Our latest Athena delivery saw the arrival of forged piston kits for RS 125 and AF1 125 models using Rotax 122 / 123 engines. With both A and C grade pistons available the A is 53.95mm and C 53.97mm. The choice is there for older barrels that may be slightly worn requiring a piston kit that’s a fraction bigger. We expect these will be very popular amongst the British Superteen racing classes as they're cheaper and much stronger than the original.

KTM announce worldwide partnership with ATHENA

ATHENA's innovative new Power Valve System

ATHENA's R&D department have come up with an innovative new Minarelli AM6 cylinder kit which features a pneumatic 'Power Valve System' to give improved low RPM and top-end performance.

ATHENA's Power Valve System exploits exhaust gas pressure by way of a guillotine valve. At low RPM, when exhaust gas pressure is low, the Power Valve is kept closed by a spring inside the pneumatic system. When RPM increases the pressure of the exhaust gas raises causing the pneumatic system to move the guillotine valve upwards.

The kit also comes with a specially designed aluminum Cast Lite piston with Molycote flat head to eliminate frictions.

Two versions will be available; 50cc and 80cc. We'll keep you posted as soon as they arrive!

Athena 170cc cylinder kit for Honda CBR 125

The Athena 170cc kits are now in stock for CBR 125 models. We are stocking two kits, one for injection models and one for carburettor models. Both kits feature aluminium nickel-carbide barrels and cast-lite pistons. The kit for injection models comes with a new ECU that changes the rpm curve bringing power in at 6000 rpm right through to 13000 rpm. Peak power on the dyno comes in at 16.8 hp on injection models, unfortunately we don't have any information for carburettor models as of yet but expect similar gains but not as low down the rev range. These kits are one of the very few parts for CBR 125's that make any real power increases. Spare pistons and gasket sets are also in stock.

Athena 183cc cylinder kit for Yamaha YZF R125 etc.

Now in stock from Athena are the long awaited 183cc cylinder kits for Yamaha 125cc 4T learner legals. They fit Yamaha YZF R125’s and WR125’s, both great looking bikes but both lacking in the power they deserve. The kit takes the capacity up to 183cc with the new aluminium nickel-carbide plated barrel and cast-lite piston. Also included in the kit is a new ECU that remaps the rpm curve bringing power straight in at 5000 rpm and holding out right through to 10500 rpm. The dyno shows a peak power of 17.1 hp at just under 9000 rpm.

50cc road tuning suggestions for Piaggio LC engines

Looking for performance parts can be confusing, especially when there are so many products to choose from. If your scooter has a Piaggio liquid cooled engine then the following suggestions will assist you in getting the best performance on the road as well as keeping your scooter reliable for everyday use:

PIAGGIO 50cc LIQUID COOLED ENGINES

For two-stroke Piaggio 50cc liquid cooled engines which are present in most Gilera/Piaggio scooters like the Gilera Runner, Piaggio NRG, Zip SP, Aprilia SR 50 R Carb etc. we recommend the following:

Cylinder kits: Picking the right 70cc kit all depends on how you want your scooter to perform. The Doppler S7R 70cc cylinder is the most powerful kit available for anyone on a budget at just £119.95 and it's quite a revvy kit meaning it’s great for anyone wanting flat out speed, but bear in mind all the power is at the top of the rev range. Alternatively the Athena HP70 is a pretty powerful aluminium cylinder kit but has very punchy power right from the bottom so it's perfect for them standing starts from the lights.

Exhaust Systems: Don’t hold back when buying an exhaust as on a two-stroke scooter it plays a crucial role in releasing potential power from your engine. The Leo Vince TT is the best all round performer for anyone on a budget and works great on 50cc scoots and relatively well on 70cc cylinder kits too. If you're able to stretch your budget to between the £120/£140 mark then go for either the Doppler S3R or the Polini Team 2 as these are revvier pipes that will help you squeeze a few extra bhp out of your scooter. If you want the most power available out of the above mentioned cylinder kits then the Yasuni C16 will give you just that but at a slightly higher price.

Variator Kits: These are often overlooked but they're one of the most important components for any scooter tuner. There are lots to choose from but we recommend using either the Polini 6 roller or the Polini 9 roller variator. Also note that the roller weights will need to be changed to match your particular set-up, rider weight etc.

The above components will make the biggest improvement in speed on your Piaggio/Gilera scooter. The following parts will further improve performance for anyone who wants to stretch their budget:

Carburettors: Piaggio and Gilera scooters made from 2005 onwards already have a 17.5mm carburettor as standard. So we recommend either the YSN 21mm or the Polini 21mm. To get the best set-up use an open type foam filter and alter the jetting to suit.

Gear kits: Providing you have a 70cc kit installed you can fit a gear up kit. Available in a number of percentages they offer an increase in top speed. Top Racing three piece kits come pre-pressed so they can be installed easier. Polini gear kits are top of the line but this comes at a higher price and need to be pressed before fitting.
