Polini Evolution CDI Units
The new Evolution CDI units from Polini are a very technically advanced product when compared to any others on the market. They work with the support of your battery however the power consumption is only 0.7Ah. They eliminate the energy loss that is generated by your flywheel meaning that more of the engines output can be transferred to your rear wheel. This means that rear wheel power is increased even if engine output is not therefore more acceleration and speed is gained. Each kit includes a connection cable and disc which allows you to connect the CDI to the computer and digitally program it if you wish. There are three kits so far as shown below. The universal kit does not include a pick up or pick up support however can be installed to any engine that has a flywheel and pick up.

Polini CP Carburettors
The recently released Polini CP carburettors are now available with 90° cable guides and also adaptors to suit original air box systems. This allows for the carb to be fitted with none or little modification to 50 / 70cc models and makes for a crisp setup using the original air box. Available in 15mm and 17.5mm in this form which are aimed more towards 50cc models.

Polini have also announced their first "Evolution" CP 19mm carburettor specifically developed for racing engines that operate between 12000 and 15000 RPM. This carburettor has a different intake pipe and a manifold union of 28mm allowing for the use of a proper performance inlet manifold and further enhancing fuel flow. The carburettor is the result of extraordinary team work between Polini's technical staff and racing teams. The end result is a reliable carburettor that gives great performance and use ability at every throttle position, not just wide open throttle. Supplied with a filter union adaptor which fits perfectly to the new Evolution air filter too.

Stickyparts S-Line Scooter Drive Belts
Standard replacement drive belts can be found at most scooter shops however the quality is often compromised once the price gets low. 50cc Scooter Exhaust Shootout
With a variety of exhaust systems on the market there’s more than enough to choose from with brands like Leo Vince, Polini, Doppler, Yasuni, Pedmoto, Metrakit, Tecnigas and many more. So which exhaust should you buy and what are the pros and cons of each system?
Before we get into it, it might be worth mentioning for the newbies who aren’t too savvy when it comes to transmission setup and how roller weights affect performance, that each exhaust system reaches its peak performance at a certain rpm. The rpm of an engine using an automatic transmission is generally set and maintained using roller weights. Why is this important? Most aftermarket systems (free flow exhausts) lack in torque and the ability to work at a lower rpm in comparison to the stock exhaust and rely on higher revs being maintained to reach that magical area where the peak power of the particular system can be found. The system with highest peak hp and with a transmission that’s set to its optimum will usually result in the broadest spread of power from acceleration to full speed. The key to any setup is to maintain the highest hp for as long as possible over the given speed range, it’s worth remembering that top speeds can differ marginally due to the rpm where peak power is seen. The higher the rpm the faster the engine components are turning which means more top speed although this difference will be minimal if the scooter in question is like our road mule Zip 50cc with standard gearing.
The goal with any purchase has to be getting exactly what you want, in most cases this is the most power from start to finish while taking into account how much money you have to spend and if a system is worth the extra cost. With this in mind we split the systems we tested into two groups – below £100 and above £100. All of the systems we tested are suitable for 50cc scooters with some of them working exceptionally well on 70cc cylinders which we’ll leave for the next shootout comparison.
The below £100 group consists of the Leo Vince TT, Giannelli Extra and Tecnigas Trek. We wanted to include the Yasuni Z in this group due to the performance similarities but with a SRP of £135 it had to move into the next group. The £100 and above group includes the Pedmoto Series 1, Yasuni Z, Yasuni R and Doppler S3R. All of these systems have a few things in common that make them a great improvement over the sub £100 pipes – brackets! “What? Brackets?” Each exhaust in the £100+ group makes use of a bracket hanger system that uses either rubber bungs to reduce vibration or, like the Pedmoto Series 1, a true silent block. As you’d expect the performance on these systems, apart from the Yasuni Z, is above the likes of the TT etc.
Our exhaust tests were conducted on our 50cc Piaggio Zip SP fitted with the following components; a 17.5mm carburettor, Polini Hi Speed variator, a standard drive belt, a Polini For Race adjustable clutch set to engage at around 5500 rpm and the standard air box. For each system that we tested time was spent making the appropriate fuelling and transmission adjustments but leaving the clutch and compression spring the same. So with these changes this still leaves some room for improvement in the setup for each of the systems.
The results...
Before looking at the dyno results and questioning why you may have seen a particular system perform either higher or lower on other dynos, you need to remember that each Dynometer will vary in the hp figure produced. The only thing that is relevant and accurate is the difference in hp between the components being tested on that day and on that particular machine! We hope that makes sense.
On our dyno we recorded the following results in power order:
Above £100:
Pedmoto Series1: 6.39 hp @ 10282 rpm
Yasuni R: 6.26 hp @ 10317 rpm
Doppler S3R: 6.22 hp @ 10463 rpm
Yazuni Z: 5.58 hp @ 9817 rpm
Below £100:
Tecnigas Trek: 6.02 hp @ 10015 rpm
Leo Vince TT: 5.74 hp @ 9550 rpm
Giannelli Extra: 5.36 hp @ 9424 rpm
It isn’t surprising that the top three are almost identical in peak hp and the rpm where it’s reached. The Pedmoto Series 1 produced the highest peak power of 6.39hp and all three systems showed an almost identical power curve on the dyno. The potential for these systems to work equally as well on 70cc cylinder kits, especially with cylinders needing to operate at a higher rpm, far outweighs the below £100 opposition.
What’s surprising from the sub £100 group is how well the Tecnigas Trek performed over the likes of the Leo Vince TT and Giannelli Extra. Take a look at the difference between the Trek and Yasuni Z – the Z is outgunned by both the TT and the Trek with the Trek giving an additional .44 hp over Yasuni’s base model. What you’ll also notice is how low the rpm is in this group when peak power is reached in comparison to the likes of the Yasuni R and Pedmoto Series 1. This makes the Leo Vince TT and Giannelli Extra ideal for 50cc cylinders but not so good when you decide you want to upgrade to a 70cc bore kit.
So what should you make of the test results? Well on the sub £100 models the Trek is a clear winner. Although Tecnigas isn’t always the most popular brand it gave the highest peak hp and managed to hold it the longest over the speed test shown on the dyno. Each of the cheaper systems also showed a reasonable operating range for peak hp to be seen which makes “getting the weights right” that much easier when it comes to the transmission.
The above £100 systems were extremely close with the Pedmoto Series 1, Yasuni R and Doppler S3R showing almost identical power curves with the Pedmoto Series 1 pipping them both with the highest peak power of 6.39hp. The disappointment of this test has to be the Yasuni Z, we already know these systems are well made and look great but with a peak hp lower than the TT. If your purchase isn’t entirely down to budget then you would probably make the jump to one of the other exhausts.
Out of all the £100+ systems we tested the Pedmoto Series 1 comes out the clear winner, not just because of price, build quality and performance, but due to the operating window the system is capable of working in. The dyno graph above shows three tests all on the same system on the same day within minutes of each other, the only difference between the dyno runs is the overall weight in the transmission; 32.7gr, 36.2gr, 37.2gr and what rpm the peak power was seen at. What you will notice is peak hp is almost the same be it with differences in the power curve although still similar even though the rpm varied from as low as 9,947 up to 10,411. This means that with the Pedmoto Series 1 you have a large window in which you can set the variator weights making DIY setup very easy. This also allows the exhaust to be more flexible when used with upgraded cylinders kits operating within a different rev range.
So, which do you choose? Well that’s always going to be your decision but for us it’s clear in both categories. We will be including the Polini Team system into the mix once we have new stock and we’ll follow up on all systems tested in the 70cc shootouts to follow.

So, 480hp Nissan GT-R versus our race tuned Polini Big Evolution 94cc Zip, head to head, which would win in a sprint race? Well if you've attended drag race meets before then you'll know that highly tuned high-spec race scoots are like missiles when it comes to straight line speed. We knew our Zip tuned to the hilt with Polini goodies would deliver, it was then down to Sam, assigned to the controls, to launch the Zip off the line. How would our pocket rocket compare against the ferocious might of Godzilla? Sit back and watch the video...

Nissan GT-R vs Pedstop 94cc Piaggio Zip
The Nissan GT-R is world renowned for being one of the fastest cars on the block with a staggering 0-60 acceleration time along with a scary top speed. The GT-R has been in numerous comparisons against equally big hp cars and motorcycles, but we think it’s time for our race scooter to try its luck against Godzilla in a less than 100 meter showdown. Crazy it may be but the scooter in question is tuned to the edge of its life and with some basic mathematics its power-to-weight ratio is nearly 650hp compared to the GT-R’s stock 480hp. Even we're not sure how this will turn out but it will be a giggle finding out.

Pedstop Track Day at Teeside Autodrome
Last week Chris, Sam and Josh managed to get some track time in at Teeside Autodrome in Middlesbrough. Testing went well despite rain and gale force winds to contend with. Chris took our Polini 94cc Zip (as featured in our video last month) out on the track. Sam got some practice on his Malossi 77c kitted Zip and whizz kid Josh made it all look easy on our Polini 70cc Big Evolution Zip, he didn't do too badly on a Kawasaki ZX6R either.

2011 Polini Evolution 70cc/94cc 2T Piaggio/Minarelli LC engines
If you've got the need for speed and desire an out and out race spec engine then how about this - a complete race engine built by the Polini factory...
Each engine has its own unique number and is built to Polini's exacting standards and every engine is dyno tested before being signed off by Polini's technicians. Two formats are available: 2T Piaggio liquid cooled (e.g. Piaggio Zip 50 SP 1996-99 / 50 SP 2001 onwards) or 2T Minarelli horizontal liquid cooled (e.g. Yamaha Aerox 50 / MBK Nitro 50 / Yamaha Jog RR) with a choice of 70cc or 94cc.
PIAGGIO 2T LC
Polini's new 2011 Evolution Piaggio 70cc engine (product code: AD/050.0937) has the same 47.6mm cylinder as well as the same layout as the 94cc big bore kit and is capable of producing between 24 to 25hp. The latest engine carries all the usual goodies along with the new Evolution cylinder (47.6mm), a new crankshaft and the latest ignition system which we already like very much, not forgetting the latest Big Evolution exhaust.
If you're looking for maximum performance then Polini's 94cc Big Evolution engine (product code: AD/050.0938) is capable of producing between 27 and 30hp! Again, not only do you get the very latest high end Polini performance products, you're getting a blue print for speed, an engine put together by expert technicians at Polini.
MINARELLI 2T HORIZONTAL LC
Polini's 70cc Minarelli horizontal liquid cooled engine, like the Piaggio version, is capable of a very impressive 25hp. Not only do you get an extensive list of high end racing parts pre-fitted, the crankcase and cylinder are also ported to Polini's very precise standards to ensure optimum performance. Athena performance parts for 2T Piaggio AC engines
If you're looking for performance upgrades, then a worthwhile consideration for engines fitted with a Piaggio air cooled engine are the following Athena parts:
Piaggio air cooled engines (e.g. Piaggio Zip / NRG)
The Athena HP 70cc aluminium sports cylinder kit provides very useable all round performance throughout the rev range making it perfect for the street. The porting and quality of this kit is excellent and it's also very durable. This particular kit features a single piston ring, carbon fibre reed petals and a bunch of gaskets. Fits all Piaggio air cooled engines.
We recommend using a bigger carb of 17.5mm or above, however this kit will still work fine with the original carburettor with a jetting increase of 10-15% along with a performance exhaust system.

This is the Athena HPR Racing 70cc cylinder kit from Athena. Like the Athena HP 70cc cylinder kit, the porting and quality is excellent and again, very durable. The HPR Racing kit features a revised port layout and flat top piston for added power. The HPR kit is higher revving than the HP kit and requires a suitable exhaust like the Yasuni C16 or Doppler RR7 for example. You will also need to use a suitable carburettor of 17.5mm or above, however the kit will work with the standard carb with a jet increase of at least 10-15%. Included in the kit are carbon fibre reed petals and a bunch of gaskets to alter squish.

The Athena Platinum series of drive belts are made in Japan so you can expect the same quality and performance as Polini drive belts. Made from reinforced Kevlar, Athena Platinum drive belts are also extremely hard wearing. Please note that Kevlar drive belts require around 100 miles to wear in.

Pedstop Track Day at Rowrah
Last weekend the Pedstop crew headed out to Rowrah in Cumbria armed with the Zips where Chris and Josh were able to get some track time in. Four race victory for Josh Brown at Three Sisters
The second round of this year's BSSO Championship took place last weekend on 08/09 May at the Three Sisters race track in Wigan. Both days went really well especially for Josh who won all four races. Not only that he broke the lap record which he held from last year but that was on a 77cc, this time our Polini Evolution 3 70cc engine gave him the muscle he needed on the track. Meanwhile, Sam successfully completed and won the Young Guns class and is getting quicker every race. Apart from injuring his knee after an off on day one, Zack did really well too bearing in mind that this was only his fourth race meeting. He appears to be getting to grips with the set up of the bike and is bringing lap times down every lap and coming in mid-pack. We can see Zack in the top three within the next meeting or two.
