Athena performance parts for 2T Piaggio LC engines

Athena produce aftermarket parts for a wide range of scooters and are a good option if you want good power increases and reliability. Here we've put together a few suggestions for getting the most out of a two-stroke Piaggio liquid cooled engine:

Piaggio liquid cooled engines (e.g. Gilera Runner)

Athena HP 70cc cylinder kit
The Athena HP 70cc aluminium cylinder kit provides very useable all round performance throughout the rev range making it perfect for the street. This is an extremely durable kit and the porting and quality is excellent. This particular kit features a single piston ring, carbon fibre reed petals and a bunch of gaskets for squish etc. Fits all Piaggio liquid cooled engines.

We recommend you use a bigger carburettor of 17.5mm or above, however this kit will work fine with the original carb with a jet increase of at least 10-15% along with a performance exhaust.

Athena HPR Racing 70cc cylinder kit
The HPR Racing 70cc cylinder kit from Athena, like the HP cylinder kit is again a quality product with some great porting and it's also very durable. The way this kit differs from the HP kit is that it has a revised port layout and features a flat top piston for added power. This kit is also higher revving and therefore requires a suitable exhaust like the Yasuni C16 or Doppler RR7. This kit will work in conjunction with the standard carb with a jetting increase of at least 10-15%, but for best performance we recommend using the HPR kit with a 17.5mm carb or above. Also included in the kit are carbon fibre reed petals and a collection of gaskets.

50cc road tuning suggestions for Piaggio LC engines

Looking for performance parts can be confusing, especially when there are so many products to choose from. If your scooter has a Piaggio liquid cooled engine then the following suggestions will assist you in getting the best performance on the road as well as keeping your scooter reliable for everyday use:

PIAGGIO 50cc LIQUID COOLED ENGINES

For two-stroke Piaggio 50cc liquid cooled engines which are present in most Gilera/Piaggio scooters like the Gilera Runner, Piaggio NRG, Zip SP, Aprilia SR 50 R Carb etc. we recommend the following:

Cylinder kits: Picking the right 70cc kit all depends on how you want your scooter to perform. The Doppler S7R 70cc cylinder is the most powerful kit available for anyone on a budget at just £119.95 and it's quite a revvy kit meaning it’s great for anyone wanting flat out speed, but bear in mind all the power is at the top of the rev range. Alternatively the Athena HP70 is a pretty powerful aluminium cylinder kit but has very punchy power right from the bottom so it's perfect for them standing starts from the lights.

Exhaust Systems: Don’t hold back when buying an exhaust as on a two-stroke scooter it plays a crucial role in releasing potential power from your engine. The Leo Vince TT is the best all round performer for anyone on a budget and works great on 50cc scoots and relatively well on 70cc cylinder kits too. If you're able to stretch your budget to between the £120/£140 mark then go for either the Doppler S3R or the Polini Team 2 as these are revvier pipes that will help you squeeze a few extra bhp out of your scooter. If you want the most power available out of the above mentioned cylinder kits then the Yasuni C16 will give you just that but at a slightly higher price.

Variator Kits: These are often overlooked but they're one of the most important components for any scooter tuner. There are lots to choose from but we recommend using either the Polini 6 roller or the Polini 9 roller variator. Also note that the roller weights will need to be changed to match your particular set-up, rider weight etc.

The above components will make the biggest improvement in speed on your Piaggio/Gilera scooter. The following parts will further improve performance for anyone who wants to stretch their budget:

Carburettors: Piaggio and Gilera scooters made from 2005 onwards already have a 17.5mm carburettor as standard. So we recommend either the YSN 21mm or the Polini 21mm. To get the best set-up use an open type foam filter and alter the jetting to suit.

Gear kits: Providing you have a 70cc kit installed you can fit a gear up kit. Available in a number of percentages they offer an increase in top speed. Top Racing three piece kits come pre-pressed so they can be installed easier. Polini gear kits are top of the line but this comes at a higher price and need to be pressed before fitting.

Doppler S7R 70cc cylinder kit 12-15hp - Piaggio LC engines

Back out of hiding comes the S7R 70cc cylinder kit from Doppler with great performance and an amazing price tag. At only £117.45 you really can't get any better power for your money: 12-15hp!

As you might have guessed this kit has been heavily discounted. Why? Because we can. Not capable of being sold in France, the home of Doppler, has left a good number of kits with a bleak future, until now.

The only bad thing about this is that we only have it available for the liquid cooled Piaggio 2T engines but if this fits your ped's requirements, get one while you can, we can assure 100% grin factor.

LED tail light for Gilera Runner ST, SP 05 > and DNA models

A new LED tail light unit is now in stock for the latest Gilera Runner models from 2005 onwards including the SP and ST range, the same unit is also suitable for all Gilera DNA models.

Press clips are supplied making fitment into the existing harness easy and as you can see from the pictures it can be wired into the indicators which when used illuminate 6 LEDs at either side of the unit.

EICMA 2009 - Piaggio USB / Gilera GP800

Piaggio USB

Piaggio presented a gas-electric concept scooter at EICMA - the 'USB' (Urban Sport Bike). Designed by Marco Lambri at Piaggio's Pontedera Style Centre, the USB has a distinct futuristic look about it with its flowing lines and Persil white cleanness. But like many concept bikes, you just know the machine won't ever hit the streets, however the design ideas and the styling may eventually filter down into production models. As it turns out the technology inside the USB has already been incorporated by Piaggio in the MP3 Hybrid which was also on display at EICMA. The USB runs on a gas-electric hybrid system which utilises lithium polymer batteries to power an electric motor attached to the rear wheel. The electric power is mated with an internal combustion engine. Surprisingly the USB's gas engine is a direct-injection two-stroke as opposed to the MP3 Hybrid's four-stroke engine. Performance claims aren't much to shout about with a top speed of 62mph. Eco-friendliness and fuel economy are the main selling points for the machine, Piaggio claim you can get 155mpg out of the bike and running on battery power alone the USB can be ridden at an average speed of 37mph for 31 miles.

Gilera Trofeo GP800

If maxi-scooters and tuned four-strokes are your thing, then Gilera's Trofeo 839cc GP800 should be of interest... Spec as follows: Ported engine, larger intake/exhaust valves and a larger throttle body. Improved air flow, K&N air filter. Rapid Bike II remapped ECU. Transmission mods include a lightened and tuned variator, lightened and tuned clutch, lightened drum clutch, D.I.D ERV3 520 size final drive chain, a 49-tooth ergal rear sprocket and an OEM front sprocket modified to 520 size. The exhaust system is made from steel and carbon and dyno tuned and flowed by FF FRESCO.

To match the performance of the bike, the handling of the GP800 has been improved with an adjustable front fork made by Alex Racing Suspension and an adjustable MUPO rear shocker again by Alex Racing. Stopping power has been improved with PT evo II oversize master cylinders front and rear and sintered brake pads. Finally, the seat has been modified for racing and is the work of Gabriele Musco. We'd love to see the bike in action.

Polini parts for Gilera GP800

Some more new arrivals from Polini have landed including the new maxi components for the Gilera GP800.

Both new parts are to benefit the transmission set up, the first is the 20% harder compression spring and new Evo slider. Exchanging this with the stock part will give faster and more consistent acceleration.

The new clutch shoes are made of magical materials that allow for longer lasting and more consistent performance during all speed conditions.
